A stark look at several characters throughout the 20th century dealing with depression and insanity, contemplating whether suicide is justfied when life has become unendurable. Although the movie’s message comes through clearly, the story line and the role of Virginia Woolf’s novel Mrs. Dalloway in the screenplay can be confusing, especially if like me you haven’t read the book. It would have helped me to know in advance that the movie is based on a novel of the same title by Michael Cunningham, a modern adaptation of Mrs. Dalloway.

The Hours is a frightenly realistic film about a day in the life of three different womam durring three very different periods of time. All living very different lives with two things in common. The stories all come together in the end at the loss of an involved character. This is a great film that will make you pause and think. Dr. Phil would have a ball trying to help the three woman in this film.
Agreed! I get the feeling Virginia Woolfe would eat Dr. Phil as an hors doeurve.
