When I watched this I thought it was directed by Darren Aronofsky, the director of pi and Requiem for a Dream, so I was prepared for a VERY dark and disturbing movie. The actual director is Christopher Nolan, who went on to make Memento. Still dark, but more concerned with a plotline. It’s interesting to look back on this movie in that light. It is not nearly as innovative as Memento, but is definitely original and has a strong plot. The spare black-and-white style works well with it. It also suffers from the same weakness as Memento though – in the end all the characters prove fairly worthless.

I have to say I liked the disjointed story line more than Memento, but his desire for characters without redeeming qualities isn’t all that fun. I don’t mind bad people but they should still be humans at the end of it all. A good bad person movie I recently saw was Croupier.
I vaguely remember enjoying that – I remember the character but can’t quite recall his fate…
