Buffalo Creek – The Big Butt
Maybe the climbers who named these rocks hoped to keep the yuppies away by giving them impolite names or, more likely, got into a competition that included putting up the hardest climbs with the foulest names. The way I see it, the visions conjured up by the names here make the reality the most pleasant…

Poem from the Trail
I can resonate with this little ditty from Sidewinder: one lone hiker here I be all by myself on the CDT my friends are all ahead by a half day I must getting closer or so other people say dreamt the past 2 nights of playing in the water think I’d go crazy if it…

Movie: Heaven (2002)
This must be what happens when you take an absurd Hollywood-style plot and play it down through the entire movie until the end, which you play up artistically. I liked the approach, which forced the focus onto the characters. With the extra breathing room often found in European movies, the tension comes from spaces that…

Western Grebes
I spotted these Western Grebes (Aechmophorus occidentalis) along my commute path this morning. Their long necks make them look distinctive on the water, then suddenly they’re gone! They were staying under water for a minute or so, then they’d appear again nearby.

Movie: Walk the Line (2005)
This was mostly an educational experience for me. When I saw Johnny, John, and June Carter Cash play on my birthday in 1996, I didn’t realize quite what a legacy I was witnessing. Vedauwoo – Poland Hill
This morning we head to Poland Hill, intending to get schooled on some more Vedauwoo cracks. We hope to toprope Fantasia, 5.9, a “classic Vedauwoo offwidth”, but the anchor situation up top doesn’t allow for an easy toprope of this route. So we end up on: Southwest Friction, 5.6. Ann leads this out of the…

Vedauwoo moonrise
We try a new campsite along FR 700S, further from the interstate than most. After dinner we take a hike to explore the local woods and boulders. A small elk observes our foray into his territory from across a meadow. The day ends in a glorious sunset/moonrise that bathes Vedauwoo in colors that I felt…

Vedauwoo – Fried on Friday
I’m working extra hours this summer to take every other Friday off, and this is the first. The extra day makes the weekend into a whole different thing, not just an extra day but a day when few people are out. Ann is interested in learning to place traditional gear, so I suggest we spend…

Geo Mashup 0.4.1 Released
No new features in this release. I’ve decided to drop all dependency on the WordPress RSS feeds – these are just done too many different ways. Most problems with posts not displaying in the infowindow have been due to this dependency. So there is now one less place for things to go wrong, and I…
