Lovely Luther Rocks
It feels like we’re really sinking into late summer and soaking up all we can. While huge fires blaze to the north, we settle in at the big meadow campground and try not to twitch too much as campers chop wood and fill the air with smoke. Bliss comes in the mornings as cooler days…

After Work Hike to Hunter Falls
In what may be our first “hike night”, we pick John up from the Reno Collective and hike to the Hunter creek falls. There’s still a bit of smoke visible high in the sky, but the temperature and breeze are about as blissful as they come. At the falls See what happens when you take…

Round Lake Loop Hike
Ann invites Jenn & Johnny on a little 6 mile hike that somehow ends up closer to ten. We all seem to agree that more is better in this case. We find some sulphur shelf mushrooms – my first batch in the Sierras, and a big one! Round Lake Sulphur shelf mushrooms Afterward we wish…

Luther Spires with Hitek Homeless
One strange thing about living and working from a camper for a year is that we knew of several other couples doing the same thing, but we were always in different places. Now that we’ve stayed in one place for a while one of them finally came within range and we finally get to meet…

Live Music: Norah Jones
Ann gave me tickets to see Norah Jones partly because they were light enough to carry on my birthday backpack trip. We aren’t big concertgoers, and were having a hard time getting excited. Our friends Grace and Sharli helped crank us up with some arcade entertainment in Harvey’s. I even manage a slim air hockey…

Lover’s Leap
Ann and I enjoy our return to multipitch climbing at Lover’s Leap, rising at 5 am to catch Knapsack Crack 5.5 and Harvey’s Wallbangers Center 5.6 before the merciless sun hits them. We didn’t want to fuss with cameras on the rock, but I got a photo of Ann getting ready before sunrise: Up at…

How far will my legs take me?
I set out running nice and slow this morning, thinking I’d just see how far I can go. The answer is about 14 miles before my legs refuse to continue, not bad. But I didn’t turn around early enough, so I had to walk another 5 miles home!

First post-hike run
Two weeks of backpacking didn’t totally ruin my running fitness, but I do feel sluggish! My body holds up pretty well through the first 7 miles before my calves and hamstrings start to tighten up. Not too bad – seems like a few more runs will get me back to my pre-hike condition.

Tahoe Rim Trail – Brockway Pass to Mount Rose Pass – Done!
Our last day on the TRT is a doosie – 19 miles packed with ridges, peaks, and localized storms all around. We’ve noticed that bears seem to like chewing up the many plastic Tahoe Rim Trail signs, but this one takes the polymer cake. Bear-eaten trail sign After raucous lightning storms before dawn, the weather…
